The Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum is honored to announce an exclusive event featuring Tom Cotter, the esteemed author, historian, and automotive enthusiast, on March 9, 2024, from 12:00 PM-2:00 PM. The presentation, titled “Cunningham: The Man and the Cars,” will delve into the life and legacy of the legendary Briggs Cunningham, a pivotal figure in American motorsports and yachting.
Tom Cotter, celebrated for his captivating “barn-find” series beginning with “The Cobra in the Barn,” will share his profound insights into Cunningham’s multifaceted career, from his contributions to car building and racing to his historic victory in the 1958 America’s Cup. Cotter will also showcase a remarkable piece of automotive history, an original Cunningham C3 Vignale, discovered in a barn in Greenville, South Carolina. This rare vehicle, one of only 27 built in 1952 to meet FIA manufacturer qualifications, exemplifies the blend of innovation and passion that characterized Cunningham’s work.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the C-3’s storied past, including its appearances at prestigious concours and its inclusion in the Museum of Modern Art’s “Ten Automobiles” exhibition. Cotter’s commitment to preserving the car’s authenticity, paired with meticulous mechanical restoration, underscores the event’s alignment with the Simeone Museum’s philosophy of celebrating automotive heritage.
Tom Cotter’s extensive career spans over four decades, encompassing roles from mechanic to marketing executive, and from racer to revered author. His contributions to automotive journalism, including his work with Vintage Motorsports, Road & Track, and the New York Times, along with his engaging Barn Find Hunter video series, have solidified his status as a “Certified Car Geek.”
A member of the Road Racing Drivers’ Club and an advisory board member for the McPherson College Auto Restoration program, Cotter’s influence extends beyond the pages of his books. His dedication to education, as evidenced by his teaching role at Belmont Abbey College and his involvement in the Amelia Island Concours, reflects his commitment to sharing his passion for automotive history and restoration.
The Simeone Museum invites enthusiasts and scholars alike to join us for this enlightening presentation, which promises to be a highlight of the automotive calendar.
Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the legacy of Briggs Cunningham through the eyes of one of the most knowledgeable figures in the car collector world.
