The Porter Collection of "Alphabet Ford" cars.
Back in December 2017 the following information was presented:
Today was bittersweet here at the AACA Museum, Inc. We said goodbye to the Porter Collection of "Alphabet Ford" cars as they make their way back to Detroit to a new home at the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant.
When the AACA Museum, Inc. opened in 2003 we were pleased to be the only place in the world where an automotive enthusiast could see the entire collection of “Alphabet Fords.” As many people know, Henry Ford experimented with a variety of different designs before settling in on what he considered the “perfect car,” the Model T, in 1908. His early cars were all named with letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, F, K, N, R and S (the letter A would come back around as the Model T’s replacement in 1927). Some of the models that comprise the “Alphabet Collection” are low production number vehicles and quite rare.
Larry Porter did the automotive community a long-lasting favor when he assembled this treasured collection. He had the foresight to protect it with a trust and the generosity to place it with our world-class museum in Hershey where it has been seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors. The AACA Museum, Inc. has been thrilled to showcase this collection for the last 15 years and honored by the confidence shown to us by the Porter Trust in allowing us to serve as their home.
Over the last few years, the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit, Michigan, has made great strides in its development as a vibrant 501(c)(3) non-profit Museum. This United States National Historic Landmark is known as the “birthplace of the Model T.” This museum is devoted to telling the early story of Henry Ford and the automobile company he created. The “Alphabet Fords”: were built at the Piquette Avenue Plant and are integral to the development of the Model T; there is no better place in the world to display this irreplaceable collection.
The AACA Museum, Inc. is happy to support this move as we send the collection “home.” This is a rare opportunity to interpret the cars in their original context. We wish the collection a safe journey from Hershey to Detroit! The cars will be available for view in April of 2018 in their new home where a big dedication is being planned.
