The 1908 Model S Runabout was one of seven different body styles offered by Ford over their K, N, R and S model lines. The Model S shared the same body as the Model N and was unique because of the cowl lamps. This variety would change in 1908 with the introduction of the new T as Ford's only model line. Most people don't known that there was a succession of different models until Henry Ford began production of the automobile for which he is most famous - the Model T. From 1903 through 1908, when the T was introduced, there were many models - and they differed significantly in size and horsepower.
This Model S was built in 1908, just prior to the introduction of the Model T in October of 1908. The Model S featured a four-cylinder motor that was rated at 15-18 horsepower. Displacement was 149 cubic-inches and a Holley carburetor was used. The Model S weighed 1400 pounds and achieved 45 miles-per-hour.
The Ford Model S was the predecessor the famous Model T that put 'America on Wheels.' The Model S was positioned between the Model N and the R. Its bodywork was more elaborate than the Model N. With a base price of $700, it was a very affordable and practical machine. Production lasted from 1907 through 1909 with a total of 3750 examples produced. Most of the Model S vehicles were two- or three-seater runabouts.
The Model S was Ford's last US market right-hand-drive model.
