1898 Léon Bollée Voiturette
This is a General interest post for auto aficionados sharing a pictorial history over the decades.
I hope you enjoy the educational - historical information...
Voiturette was first registered by Léon Bollée in 1895 to name his new motor tricycle. The term became so popular in the early years of the motor industry that it was used by many makers to describe their small cars. The word comes from the French word for "automobile", voiture.
The first “Voiturette” built by Léon Bollée was in 1886. This motorized tricycle was powered by a horizontal single-cylinder engine that displaced 882 cubic centimeters and achieved 3hp at a 800 noisy revolutions per minute. It produced a top speed of 27 miles per hour and featured a belt drive, arm and link steering and hot tube ignition. Several hundred were made for Léon Bollée by Hurtu & Diligeon, only the prototypes were made at the Le Mans factory.
The driver steered with his right hand, while his left operated a versatile lever that changed gears, applied the brake or engaged the driving belt. The seating arrangement places the driver safely behind the passenger.
