Barney Oldfield, born June 3, 1878 started his career racing bicycles and later, the new, exciting motor car.
Oldfield and partner, Cooper bought a race car from Henry Ford and drove it to victory in October 1902 against favorite Alexander Winton. The victory made Oldfield and Ford name in the automotive field.
On this day in 1903, Barney Oldfield became the first person to drive a one mile track ( Indiana State Fairgrounds, Indianapolis IL ) in under 1 minute with the Ford, dubbed " Old 999 ".
