Please join us as we welcome our very special guest, award-winning motorcycle racer and producer Peter Starr to the Simeone. On Saturday, August 18, at 6:00 we will open our doors to Peter for an exclusive screening of his award-winning motorcycle film,
Sponsored by the Simeone Museum, this one-night event will feature food, film and a night to remember for any race fans.
Bol d’Or – (24 hours of Le Mans) – It is virtually impossible to convey to an observer the actual agonies and ecstasies that a competitor experiences when racing a motorcycle for 24 hours. There is no medium that can truly inject the necessary adrenaline and extract blood to produce the accuracy and extremes of the highs and lows. The highs that make a racer believe he is immortal and the lows that often see him all too close to death’s door. Film Maker Peter Starr, who himself competed in 24-hour motorcycle races of this ilk in the 1960s, returned to the element of motorcycle racing that he knew best. In 1976 Starr took his film crews to Le Mans, France to cover the famous Bol d’Or, a 24-hour race that had become the jewel in the crown of endurance road racing. 61 motorcycles, 122 riders, 250,000 spectators and 24 hours of grueling competition.
Jean Claude Chemarin and Alex George, (Honda) won this event. Other stars featured in this classic racing drama included Jean Francois Balde, Christian Sarron, Yvon DuHamel, Pat Evans, Dave Croxford, and Gary Green.
As attrition took its toll, the attention turned to the sheer magnitude of the event. The ecstasy and exasperation of finishing are unique in all of racing, but winning is indescribable. 1976 – 45 minutes.
Winner – Rene La Loux Award, Best Television Sports Special, Paris, France
