1980 The last IH Scout rolls off the assembly lines from the Fort Wayne, IN factory. After 20 years and 532,673 Scouts, the last one, number 532,764, a red Scout II powered by a Nissan diesel, rolled off the line. The Scout was the first competitor to Jeep and helped spawn the SUV segment which later included the Ford Bronco, Chevy Blazer, and the Dodge Ram.
An independent company headed by Ed Russell
( Good Times Vans, Prestige Vehicles Ambulance, CVI and Open Concepts International T top company ) had tried to buy the line, but due to the second gas crunch, Ed's businesses crumbled and financing could not be raised.
